I've read every making-of-Star Wars book from the original Larry Weinberg book that came out in the late 70s to the modern day coffee-table books by Rinzler. I've watched every scrap of documentary footage from official releases to barely watchable grainy video. Magazines? I have hundreds. When Roger Christian's book came out, I put it off for a while thinking "what more can I learn?" In the words of Obi-Wan, "I was wrong." Roger was there from the very beginning and takes you through every step of the journey. He doesn't gloss over anything and is super detail oriented, while being personable and entertaining. I couldn't believe how much more there was to discover about the highs and lows that were the making of Star Wars. If you're a casual SW fan or one who thinks they've read it all - get it, you won't be sorry.Roger also worked on Alien as a set-decorator / prop maker as well as made his own film, Black Angel, which was released in Europe in conjunction with The Empire Strike Back. These chapters were more than filler, they were chock full of fascinating struggles and accomplishments. Reading Cinema Alchemist felt like getting a personal tour through late 70s film making by a humble master craftsman and true lover of film history.I've bought tons of products from Amazon over the years but this is the first time I felt like I had to give a review so all the Star Wars fans and film lovers didn't miss out on a fantastic book.Chris
This book gave me a new way to totally enjoy Star Wars and Alien! After finishing the book I went back and actually looked at the props closer based on the information provided by the author. For Star Wars you will have to read the book for the details about the guns, the ships (especially the Millennium Falcon), the robots, Luke's land speeder, crash sites, desert shots and others. It is amazing to read how they created some of the most iconic items. To be honest, I still need to watch Alien again - someday very soon.If you want insight into the props making Star Wars and Alien on a low budget then this book is for you. Very enjoyable read.
We see the results of many people who work on a movie but never know their names. An important part of both the films Star Wars and Alien can be attributed to Roger Christian. Movie executives didn't want to spend too much money on fantasy and science-fiction movies so the art departments didn't have much to work with. As an art director and set decorator Roger Christian understood this and found ways to make both films have a unique but familiar look; a lived-in universe that helped the audience relate to the story. His book goes into details of how bits of scrap materials were used to create iconic things such as lightsabers, the Millenium Falcon and the Nostromo. He gives his experiences on both movies and how so much was done with so little. This book is a must read for anyone that wants to know more about the behind-the-screen details of Star Wars and Alien.
Wonderful, wonderful book by a master film craftsman. Loved hearing Roger's inside tales of the making of Star Wars, Alien, and his own feature film. My only quibble is that the book could've used a more thorough editorial pass, as the author repeats many of the same points and opinions throughout the book. It's a minor annoyance, though -- far overshadowed by the more substantial perspective offered into the making of these tremendously important films.
Star Wars and Alien are two movies that will never be repeated again. For the little money they had, the movies set the bar high. Roger gives us another side to the making of, the only down side to the book is that it could have been longer and more pictures. To Roger I say Thank You for all the work you did for them, you and everyone else on the crew broke down and gave us a new way to tell stories.
